Abstract
Statement of the problem: In dentistry, occasional chipping of porcelain from metal surface in porcelain fused to metal restoration remains a problem till now. An optimal firing is thus essential for the clinical success of the porcelain-fused to metal restoration . Purpose: This in vitro study evaluated the microstructural properties of the ceramic/metal interface in the porcelain fused to metal (PFM) copings under different firing atmospheres(vacuum and inert) Materials and Methods: To meet the above mentioned goal, the porcelain was fused to metal at different firing temperatures (9600-990oC) in vacuum and argon atmosphere . The microstructural observations of interface between porcelain and metal were evaluated using Scanning electron microscopy . Results: It was observed that an optimum firing temperature of 975oC under argon atmosphere is preferred for better adhesion properties of porcelain non-precious metal alloy. As the firing temperature was increased, the pores became less in number as well as the size of the pores decreased at the porcelain/metal interface up to 975oC but increased in size at 990oC. Conclusions:It is suggested that the presence of pores may trigger the crack propagation along the interface, decreasing the bond strength and causing the failure of the porcelain fused to metal restoration during masticatory action.
